The autonomous vehicle industry is booming in 2026, with 81 new startups emerging, a 66% increase from the previous year. This resurgence is driven by advances in AI, particularly base models that enable more efficient end-to-end architectures. These models generalize well across different environments, making AV deployment more cost-effective and rapid. Open-source models like Nvidia's Alpamayo and Qwen's vision-language-action models have lowered barriers to entry.

Many new startups are targeting robotaxi services, competing with giants like Waymo. Puneeth Meruva of Trucks VC believes there's room for these new players to specialize in specific regions or route types.

In other news, Re:Build, a manufacturing accelerator, has raised $2.1 billion to expand its capacity. Bedrock Robotics, specializing in autonomous excavation, has raised $600 million. DoorDash acquired Instacart for $17 billion, strengthening its position in the food delivery market.

PreScalar, developing industrial software, raised $7 million in seed funding. Elroy Air, a startup developing autonomous drones, named Jeremy Hux as its new CFO ahead of an IPO. Ford announced new EV chargers, while GM settled a data privacy lawsuit for $220 million.

Kodiak AI signed its first commercial agreement to provide 75 autonomous trucks to DTL Transport starting in 2028. Rivian reported strong third-quarter results and expanded its joint venture with Volkswagen Group to include IA assistants. Tesla is collaborating with Turo to increase adoption of its Full Self-Driving system. Waymo and Toyota formalized a production partnership for AV-ready vehicles.

With the increase in AV startups, cyber insurance has become crucial for protection against cyber risks.
